Conflict Management

Creating Influence
While this seems like a very specific niche issue, Conflict Management is part of a larger issue of a person’s ability to create influence. Creating influence is a significant part of leadership because command and control styles are effective only in limited situations. Effective leadership, indeed effective management, requires the ability to resolve conflict not just effectively, but with a style that builds relationship in the process.

Over the years I have evaluated many conflict assessment instruments, and have found only one that really is productive. It is brief (about 15 questions) and is very hard for the person being assessed to manage the results.

It provides me with an understanding of 4 levels of conflict:

  1. The persons underlying philosophy about conflict
  2. Their style in one-on-one situations
  3. Their style within their group
  4. Their style between groups

It also can be use in a 360 Feedback context, where the perception of others can be provided.
